Answer Key + Explained Answers

Q1 – B) Jupiter. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system (diameter about 143,000 km). Saturn is second largest; Neptune is fourth; Earth is fifth.

Q2 – A) Mercury. Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system (diameter about 4,879 km). Mars is second smallest; Venus is third smallest; Pluto is a dwarf planet, not a planet.

Q3 – B) Sun. The Sun is the nearest star to Earth (about 150 million km away). Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, not nearest; Polaris is the North Star; Alpha Centauri is the nearest star system beyond the Sun.

Q4 – B) Mercury. Mercury is the first (closest) planet from the Sun. Venus is second, Earth third, Mars fourth.

Q5 – B) Neptune. Neptune is the last (farthest) planet from the Sun (eighth). Uranus is seventh, Saturn sixth, Pluto is a dwarf planet.

Q6 – B) CO2. Carbon dioxide = one carbon atom + two oxygen atoms = CO2. CO is carbon monoxide; O2 is oxygen gas; C2O is not carbon dioxide.

Q7 – A) H2O. Water = two hydrogen atoms + one oxygen atom = H2O. CO2 is carbon dioxide; O2 is oxygen gas; H2 is hydrogen gas.

Q8 – B) Au. Gold’s symbol is Au (from Latin aurum, meaning gold). Ag is silver, Fe is iron, Gd is gadolinium.

Q9 – A) Ag. Silver’s symbol is Ag (from Latin argentum, meaning silver). Au is gold, Si is silicon, Sr is strontium.

Q10 – B) Fe. Iron’s symbol is Fe (from Latin ferrum, meaning iron). Ir is iridium, In is indium, I is iodine.

Q11 – C) Nitrogen. Nitrogen makes up about 78% of Earth’s atmosphere (most abundant). Oxygen is about 21%, carbon dioxide about 0.04%, hydrogen trace.

Q12 – B) Carbon dioxide. Plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) for photosynthesis (with water + sunlight → glucose + oxygen). Oxygen is released, not absorbed; nitrogen and hydrogen are not absorbed for photosynthesis.

Q13 – B) Oxygen. Plants release oxygen (O2) during photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is absorbed, not released; nitrogen and hydrogen are not released.

Q14 – B) Heart. The heart pumps blood through the human body. Liver filters blood, lung exchanges gases, kidney filters waste — none pump blood.

Q15 – B) Brain. The brain is used for thinking. Heart pumps blood, liver filters blood, stomach digests food.

Q16 – B) Skin. Skin is the largest organ of the human body (by area and weight). Liver is the largest internal organ, but skin is largest overall. Heart and lung are smaller.

Q17 – B) Femur. Femur (thigh bone) is the longest bone in the human body. Humerus is the arm bone, tibia is the shin bone, ulna is a forearm bone — all shorter.

Q18 – C) 37°C. Normal human body temperature is about 37°C (98.6°F). 35°C is hypothermia, 36°C is low, 39°C is fever.

Q19 – D) Vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced in the skin by sunlight (UV). Vitamin A is for vision, B for energy, C for immunity — none are produced in skin by sunlight.

Q20 – A) Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for vision (night vision). Vitamin B is for energy, C for immunity, D for bones — none are essential for vision.

Weak-Section Review

Which part did you score lowest in? Write the 3 questions you missed, the correct answers, and one line for each explaining why. General Science: revise planets (Jupiter largest, Mercury smallest / first, Neptune last, Sun nearest star), chemistry (CO2 carbon dioxide, H2O water, Au gold, Ag silver, Fe iron), human body (heart pumps blood, brain thinking, skin largest organ, femur longest bone, 37°C normal, Vitamin D sunlight, Vitamin A vision). General Ability: revise atmosphere (nitrogen most abundant), photosynthesis (CO2 absorbed, O2 released). Re-attempt this set in 2 days.
