Answer Key + Explained Answers:

Q1 – B) Ag. Ag is the symbol for silver (from Latin argentum). Si is silicon, Sr is strontium, Sv is not the symbol for silver.

Q2 – B) Fe. Fe is the symbol for iron (from Latin ferrum). Ir is iridium, In is indium, Io is not an element symbol.

Q3 – C) O. O is the symbol for oxygen. Ox, Oy and Og are not the symbol for oxygen.

Q4 – C) Na. Na is the symbol for sodium (from Latin natrium). So and Sd are not element symbols, Sm is samarium.

Q5 – B) H2O. Water is H2O. CO2 is carbon dioxide, O2 is oxygen gas, NaCl is common salt.

Q6 – B) 0°C. At standard atmospheric pressure, water freezes at 0°C.

Q7 – C) 100°C. At standard atmospheric pressure, water boils at 100°C.

Q8 – C) Heart. The heart pumps blood around the body. The liver, lung and kidney have different functions.

Q9 – B) Lung. The lungs are used for breathing. The heart pumps blood, the stomach digests food, the skin protects the body.

Q10 – C) Brain. The brain controls thought, memory and movement. The heart pumps blood, the liver filters blood, the kidney filters waste.

Q11 – C) 90. 30% of 300 = 0.30 × 300 = 90.

Q12 – C) 48. Pattern: ×2: 3 × 2 = 6, 6 × 2 = 12, 12 × 2 = 24, 24 × 2 = 48.

Q13 – C) 38. y + 12 = 50, so y = 50 − 12 = 38.

Q14 – C) 72. 12 × 6 = 72.

Q15 – C) 9. A nonagon has 9 sides (nona = nine). Heptagon has 7, octagon has 8, decagon has 10.

Q16 – C) Paris. Paris is the capital of France. Berlin is Germany, Madrid is Spain, Rome is Italy.

Q17 – D) Tokyo. Tokyo is the capital of Japan. Seoul is South Korea, Beijing is China, Bangkok is Thailand.

Q18 – B) Mars. Mars is known as the Red Planet because of its reddish appearance. Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are not called the Red Planet.

Q19 – C) Carbon dioxide. Plants absorb carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. Oxygen is released by plants, nitrogen is the main gas in air but is not the photosynthesis input, hydrogen is not absorbed for photosynthesis.

Q20 – B) Oxygen. Humans need oxygen to breathe to live. Carbon dioxide is breathed out, nitrogen makes up most of inhaled air but is not the gas the body uses, helium is not needed for breathing.

Weak-Section Review:

Weak-Section Review: Which section did you score lowest in? Write the 3 questions you missed, the correct answers, and one line for each explaining why. Science: revise Ag = silver, Fe = iron, O = oxygen, Na = sodium, H2O = water, freezing 0°C, boiling 100°C, heart pumps blood, lungs for breathing, brain controls thought. Quantitative: revise 30% of 300 = 90, ×2 series 48, y = 38, 12 × 6 = 72, nonagon 9 sides. General Knowledge: revise Paris = France, Tokyo = Japan, Mars = Red Planet, plants absorb carbon dioxide, humans need oxygen. Re-attempt this set in 2 days.
