Answer Key + Explained Answers

Q1 – B) Jupiter. Jupiter is the largest planet. Saturn is second, Neptune is fourth, Earth is fifth.
Q2 – C) Oxygen. Plants release oxygen during photosynthesis (and absorb CO2). CO2 is absorbed, nitrogen is inert, hydrogen is trace.
Q3 – C) Peregrine falcon. Peregrine falcon is the fastest bird (over 300 km/h in a dive). Ostrich is the fastest flightless bird (on land), eagle is fast but slower, sparrow is slow.
Q4 – B) Ear. Ear is used for hearing. Eye sees, nose smells, tongue tastes.
Q5 – B) Au. Gold is Au (from Latin “aurum” = gold). Ag is silver, Gd is gadolinium, “Go” is not a symbol.
Q6 – B) Neptune. Neptune is the coldest planet by average temperature (about -200°C). Uranus is also very cold (coldest minimum recorded), Mars is warmer, Mercury is hot.
Q7 – D) Vitamin D. Milk is a source of Vitamin D (and calcium). Vitamin A (vision), B (energy), C (citrus) are not milk’s main vitamin.
Q8 – B) Hen. Hen (bird) lays eggs. Cow, goat, and dog are mammals (give birth).
Q9 – B) Absorb water. Roots absorb water (and minerals) from soil. Leaves make food, flowers reproduce, colour comes from pigments.
Q10 – B) Stapes. Stapes (in the ear) is the smallest bone. Femur is the largest, tibia is the shin bone, humerus is the arm bone.
Q11 – B) Rs 300. One chair = 900 divided by 3 = Rs 300.
Q12 – B) 50. Each term adds 10: 10 + 10 = 20, 20 + 10 = 30, 30 + 10 = 40, 40 + 10 = 50. (45, 55, 60 are not +10.)
Q13 – C) 50. 5% of 1000 = 0.05 × 1000 = 50.
Q14 – C) 12. z – 3 = 9, so z = 9 + 3 = 12.
Q15 – C) 225. 15 squared = 15 × 15 = 225. (150, 200, 250 are not squares of 15.)
Q16 – C) 64. 4 cubed = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64. (16 = 4 squared, 32 and 128 are not cubes of 4.)
Q17 – C) 8. An octagon has 8 sides (octa = eight). Hexagon has 6, heptagon has 7, nonagon has 9.
Q18 – B) 366. A leap year has 366 days (February has 29 days). A normal year has 365.
Q19 – C) 130. 60 + 70 = 130.
Q20 – C) 375. 500 – 125 = 375.

Weak-Section Review

Which section did you score lowest in? Write the 3 questions you missed, the correct answers, and one line for each explaining why. General Science: revise Jupiter (largest planet), oxygen (plants release), peregrine falcon (fastest bird), ear (hearing), Au (gold), Neptune (coldest), Vitamin D (milk), hen (lays eggs), roots (absorb water), stapes (smallest bone). General Ability: practise unitary method, +10 series, percentages, algebra, squares / cubes, shapes (octagon 8), leap year (366 days), addition / subtraction. Re-attempt this set in 2 days.
