Answer Key + Explained Answers:

Q1 – C) Greenland. Greenland is the largest island (about 2.16 million sq km). Madagascar is 4th, Borneo is 3rd, Sumatra is 6th.

Q2 – B) Acetylene. Acetylene is used for welding (oxy-acetylene flame). Oxygen is for breathing, nitrogen is inert, CO2 is exhaled.

Q3 – C) Peregrine falcon. Peregrine falcon is the fastest bird (over 380 km/h in a dive). Eagle is fast, ostrich is flightless, sparrow is slow.

Q4 – B) Nose. Nose helps us to smell. Ear hears, eye sees, tongue tastes.

Q5 – C) Au. Gold is Au (from Latin “aurum” = gold). Gd is gadolinium, Go is not a symbol, Ag is silver.

Q6 – C) Mercury. Mercury has the shortest year (about 88 days). Venus is 225 days, Earth is 365 days, Mars is 687 days.

Q7 – C) Nitrogen. Nitrogen is used to preserve food (inert atmosphere). Oxygen spoils food, CO2 is for soft drinks, hydrogen is flammable.

Q8 – C) Cow. Cow gives us milk. Dog is a pet, cat is a pet, horse is a ride animal.

Q9 – B) Absorb water. Roots absorb water (and minerals). Leaves make food, fruits produce seeds, stems support leaves.

Q10 – B) Stapes. Stapes (in the ear) is the smallest bone. Femur is largest, humerus is arm, tibia is leg.

Q11 – B) Rs 10. One pen = 80 divided by 8 = Rs 10.

Q12 – C) 25. Each term adds 5: 5 + 5 = 10, 10 + 5 = 15, 15 + 5 = 20, 20 + 5 = 25. (22, 23, 30 are not +5.)

Q13 – C) 100. 50% of 200 = 0.50 × 200 = 100.

Q14 – C) 10. c + 7 = 17, so c = 17 – 7 = 10.

Q15 – D) 900. 30 squared = 30 × 30 = 900. (600, 700, 800 are not squares of 30.)

Q16 – C) 125. 5 cubed = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125. (25 = 5 squared, 100 and 150 are not cubes of 5.)

Q17 – C) 10. A decagon has 10 sides (deca = ten). Octagon has 8, nonagon has 9, dodecagon has 12.

Q18 – C) 60. 1 hour = 60 minutes.

Q19 – C) 500. 300 + 200 = 500.

Q20 – B) 600. 900 – 300 = 600.

Weak-Section Review: Which section did you score lowest in? Write the 3 questions you missed, the correct answers, and one line for each explaining why. General Science: revise Greenland (largest island), acetylene (welding), peregrine falcon (fastest bird), nose (smell), Au (gold), Mercury (shortest year), nitrogen (preserve food), cow (milk), roots (absorb water), stapes (smallest bone). General Ability: practise unitary method, +5 series, percentages, algebra, squares / cubes, shapes (decagon 10), time (1 hour = 60 minutes), addition / subtraction. Re-attempt this set in 2 days.
